Ear Pain & Ringing
50% of patients with a TMJ Disorder notice ear pain but do not have signs of infection.
The ear pain is usually described as being in front of or below the ear, as well as:
- Hissing, Buzzing or Ringing
- Decreased Hearing
- Ear Pain, Ear Ache, No Infection
- Clogged, “Itchy” Ears
- Vertigo, Dizziness
Often, patients are treated multiple times for a presumed ear infection, which can often be distinguished from TMJ by an associated hearing loss or ear drainage (which would be expected if there really was an ear infection).
Because ear pain occurs so commonly, ear specialists are frequently called on to make the diagnosis of a TMJ disorder.
Many patients struggle with mystery ear pain for years before discovering that the root of their problem is associated with TMJ/TMD.
If you are experiencing ear pain and can’t seem to find an accurate diagnosis related to your symptoms, we encourage you to explore the possibility that TMJ/TMD is the root of the problem.
