When treating your TMJ symptoms, it is always best to practice good behaviors in addition to wearing your dental splints. Practicing the “do’s and don’ts” can help improve your TMJ symptoms and put you on the path to a pain free life. Do not eat hard or crunchy foods that may require prolonged chewing. Stick to a soft diet if possible or cut your food into small pieces. Do not bite food with your front teeth and try to avoid opening your mouth wide. If you are wearing a dental splint, do not play with it with your teeth or tongue. Try not to clinch or grind your teeth and remember to keep your teeth slightly apart, breathing through your nose, not your mouth. Do not bite your nails, lower lip, or chew on any objects including gum. If you notice soreness or pain in your jaw, try to correct your habit right away and remember to try to avoid this action in the future.
